A Last Minute Gift
The HON book stand is a result of having no clue what to give my little brother as a Christmas gift. Something we share is a love for reading and story telling. So when he said he could use a stand to store and display what book he is reading, I knew it was the perfect direction.
The Floating Bookmark
To display this book while still providing a function to the reader, the idea of a floating bookmark became the foundation of this exploration. The stand's form was driven by making calculated, diagrammatic alterations to this essential in very reader's arsenal.

Simple Craft
The Japanese craft inspiration was more of a process accident than planned intention. I wanted to lean into using hand tools as much as possible to convey a personal touch in this product. It became evident throughout the making process that my fascination with the craft inherent to Japanese design was beginning to show. It became more about the beauty of the materials I was using and their interactions, leading to the simple elegance the stand presents today.
