Overview
This lighting project aimed to teach students how to use biomimicry to create a light source for a specific user of their choice.
My approach to this project was to design a light for the busy college student. Through the iterative process, the concept of aggression showed to be an effective way to satisfy the biomimicry component of the design brief.
The final task lamp, dubbed "Attack" aimed to capture the aggressive nature of a snake to inspire the user to "attack" the work in front of them.
Design Narrative
Five songs to memorize by Friday. A statics exam on Thursday. Music theory assignment due Wednesday evening. You read the schedule to yourself after a long day of Tuesday classes. Live as a double major is anything but comfortable. The bed sitting two feet away is calling for you to sink into bliss, but you know that is not currently an option. There is too much to be done. While slowly pulling the chair out from under your desk, you let out a sigh, knowing tonight will not soon come to an end. Once you’ve cued up all the right songs to get the blood pumping, you turn on a light. The bright light stings as the bass of the hip-hop track blares in your ears. Coffee that is still too hot burns the tip of your tongue.
This is not a calm experience.
Light attacks the page and exposes the black letters outlining the statics review that sits in front of you. Problem after problem, you grind away at the test review, while mouthing along to recordings from dress rehearsals. You push aside the completed review and slide the sheet music into the light. As the notes dance off the page, you jot down how they move and the stories they tell. A look up at the clock shows you are ahead of schedule. Maybe you will be able to answer the bed’s call.
